After being inspired by my friend J, I decided we would try dipping apples in caramel for our Monday night FHE. Since it was just the three of us, I decided to keep it simple. I bought a couple of small bags of caramels at Target (not the Kraft brand), and warmed them in my Little Dipper crockpot. I bought some sprinkles and chopped some nuts. And we went to work.
The first thing we had to deal with was the caramel being too thick. This is where I think we might have had better luck with the Kraft brand rather than store brand. My friends at Our Best Bites have an entry on caramel apples, and they specifically say Kraft, and they don't add anything to it once it has melted to make it thinner. We added a couple of tablespoons of milk to make ours more dippable, and it worked.
Of course, Asher might just eat the apple. Silly kid doesn't have much of a sweet tooth.
Then we went to sprinkling and such. With more practice, I might be able to figure out the art of this a little better, but they were still decent looking. And totally edible. ;) I'm sure we'll try it again sometime.

I don't know about Asher not having a sweet tooth...I remember him reaching as high as he could to grab the container of cupcakes off the counter on Labor Day weekend ;)
Emily, I have a great carmel dip recipe. It would work good for carmeled apples as well. Here it is:
1/2 c butter
1/2 C white karo syrup
1 c brown sugar
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1 capful of vanilla.
(You can also add some cinnamon at the end) Mix all ingredients together in a saucepan and bring to a boil, and then set on love to simmer for a little bit. It is really good 2nd day in.
You can dip your apples and then refrigerate to set the carmel, or just dip apple slices or whatever else you may want to dip in deliciousness. Enjoy
