Venturing out

Yesterday Enoch and I decided to go for a hike, and we wanted to go somewhere we hadn't been before. I had seen something online about trails in South Mountain Park which is on Phoenix's south end (imagine that!).

So we set out yesterday morning. We knew it would be nearly 100 degrees yesterday and we were going late morning, so we came prepared with plenty of water in our matching packs we got at Costco. But first, we had a hard time finding the place. We were using the directions provided on the website, but they weren't telling us where we needed to go, so we went with a back up trail and were finally able to locate a parking lot.

We were pretty disappointed and should have deduced as much. From a distance, South Mountain is pretty brown and non-descript. It's much the same in person, I assure you. There were a few saguaro cacti here and there and a lot of dead brush and other forms of cactus. And no shade anywhere. Anywhere! Good thing I had put the sunscreen on generously.

So we hiked up and down for about an hour and a half. We didn't get any pictures because of a lack of battery power, which was just as well. There wasn't much of picturesque quality.

But now we know, and we probably won't return there.

I remember going hiking with David and Steven when I was dating with David. Yep, I was so shocked to hike there because of no trees and no shade. I agree with you, no more hiking in Phoenix.
